1 Roads must meet different objectives imposed by requirements related to traffic flow, traffic safety regulations and environmental restrictions. In connection with these categories, there are certain design regulations which vary depending on national or regional laws applicable on the road’s location. These regulations establish the amount and width of lanes, the road shoulders, the curvature in slope stretches, the cant of the curves, the vertical curves and the visibility distances. In turn, these design elements are influenced by a wide range of design control mechanisms, engineering criteria and specific objectives, such as the quality of the topography, the areas of the surrounding landscape, environmental considerations and the possible geotechnical treatment needed for the construction.

2 The use of remote sensors through EKOFASTBA’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offers a significant improvement in obtaining digital elevation models for the planning of new road networks. Our systems are capable of exploring in an autonomous way the area to be analyzed and taking pictures at given time intervals. Finally, we gather together all the pictures and organize them in a three-dimensional mosaic that defines the digital elevation model required for the analysis and study of the infrastructure’s construction.
